INTRODUCTION TO NO.9 THOMPSON
Relaxed, casual elegance with an emphasis on accessibility - this is No.9 Thompson.
Originally a diffusion line of Jim Thompson fabrics, No.9 was launched in 2006 under the creative direction of Richard Smith. The brand is now a dynamic younger sibling to the original, sharing its sense of adventure and respect for traditional craftsmanship with an added dimension of informality and a painterly scope.
Richard conceives collections twice yearly, including prints, wallpapers, wovens and trim. All based on his own hand-painted artwork, the designs are reproduced using a variety of materials including linen and cotton. The brand’s first collection of high performance fabrics was launched in 2012: ideal for inside or out, their versatility encapsulates the fluid thinking behind No.9, whose designs are equally at home in both town or country.
Each collection is created by Richard at his studio by the sea in Sussex, England. A flair for unexpected colour combinations and an appreciation for pattern, from florals to geometrics, underscores every design. Production is overseen personally by Richard at the Jim Thompson mill in Thailand, three hours north of Bangkok. Here, in conjunction with weavers and printers, he refines his designs to create truly original pieces that are woven or printed in situ.
The result is a brand that combines heritage with a contemporary sensibility. No.9’s fabrics have won several plaudits across the interiors industry, including World of Interiors ‘Best Collection – Pageant’ in 2016 and ‘Best Collection - Anatolia’ in 2015 from Homes & Gardens.
